Brian’s Story

When I was 16 years old, I moved from my home in Michigan to a small town in New York. Everything was new: a new town, new faces, new school. In my first week of school, every day in algebra 2 was a struggle. I went to everyone that I knew for help. I asked my parents, aunts, and uncles. I asked my cousins who at the time had college degrees and high paying careers. Although they all wanted to help, no one had the knowledge to help.

Weeks went by where every night after school spelled hours of trying to complete my math homework. If it wasn’t for a great teacher who spent countless hours with me outside of school, I would still not understand that material that I use on a weekly basis in my career to this day.

At the end of my first year, I received the award for most improved student in mathematics. This wasn’t because I made a decision to study harder, be more determined, or somehow raised my IQ. It was because I had the right help at the right time.

That’s when I knew we needed more teachers like the one who helped me, so I started the Menlo Park Tutoring company with the goal that no student who wants to learn will have to struggle night after night without the right help.

Now, I’ve gone on to graduate from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. I’ve gone from not understanding a word of what was said in class to being a successful engineer with mastery of the material. I now teach the same class that I struggled in all those years ago.
